Plum tickled pink by in-form Fassi

Sharks head coach John Plumtree has praised Aphelele Fassi’s outstanding attacking skills while arguing that the star fullback’s defence is also improving.

Fassi stole the show by scoring a try and setting up another to steer the Sharks to a gritty victory over Edinburgh in Durban in the Vodacom URC on Saturday.

His impressive try, along with captain Lukhanyo Am's touchdown, saw the Sharks climb off the bottom of the table by beating Edinburgh 23-13 at Kings Park.

Fassi’s standout performance against Edinburgh reflects his increased consistency and attacking prowess, and Plumtree emphasised his evolution as a genuine attacking threat while acknowledging the 26-year-old’s occasional errors.

The three-Test Springbok leads in various statistical categories in the URC, notably running metres (1 090), and second in carries (168). His defence remains a work in progress, yet Plumtree notes his kicking adds another dimension to his game.

“Fassi has been outstanding,” the Sharks boss was quoted in the media. “He’s been playing well all year. He’s prone to making the odd mistake but that’s what players who create do.

"He’s climbing right up there and finding more consistency in his game. It’s lovely to see. He’s a genuine attacking threat for us.”

Plumtree added: “I thought he tackled and defended really well [against Edinburgh]. Good for him.

“He’s got a lovely left foot. I’m happy he’s using it and just happy for him overall. It really seems like he’s enjoying his rugby.”
