The first Test between the two countries took place at Hampden Park in Glasgow on Saturday, 17 November 1906 – a little under 118 years ago.

Scotland won the match 6-0.

That match was the first on South Africa’s first official international tour.

It was also the tour in which the Springbok nickname was coined.

South Africa lost to Scotland, defeated Ireland (15-12) and Wales (11-0) and drew with England (3-3) on that tour.

Never been a draw

Fast forward to Sunday, 10 November 2024 and the sides will do battle for the 30th time, this time at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

In the 29 Tests to date, the Springboks have won 24 and lost five.

There is yet to have been a draw between the two countries.

The Springboks have scored a total of 760 points and have conceded 324 – for an average final score of 26-11.

Of the 29 Tests played to date, 20 have taken place in Scotland, seven in South Africa and two on ‘neutral’ ground.

The Springboks hold a 15-5 win record in matches held in Scotland and have won all seven of the Tests staged in Mzansi, as well as the two on ‘neutral’ territory.

Kick-off on Sunday is scheduled for 18:10 SA time.

Siya Kolisi’s team will take on England and Wales in end-of-year Tests following this weekend’s match.
