England Star Marcus Smith Reiterates Fly-Half Ambition Amidst Fullback Trials

England's 26-year-old rugby sensation, Marcus Smith, is currently being trialed at fullback for the national team, a position he is set to start in for the upcoming match against Fiji. However, Smith has unequivocally stated his long-term ambition: to play at fly-half.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Smith declared, "I am not shy in saying I want to play at 10," expressing his desire to emulate rugby legends like Jonny Wilkinson and Dan Carter, who inspired him as a child. He added that he enjoys getting his hands on the ball and believes he is fundamentally a No.10.

Despite Smith's clear preference, England's defence coach Kevin Sinfield insists that the fullback experiment is far from over. Sinfield views abandoning the trial now as a "wasted opportunity," acknowledging that while Smith hasn't had extensive time in the No.15 jersey, he believes the player has the potential to be a "very, very good 15". Sinfield also noted that improvements are needed in both Smith's fly-half and fullback play.

Smith remains committed to the team, stating it's a "blessing" to be able to cover multiple positions and that he will strive to perform at the highest level wherever he plays. He draws inspiration from New Zealand's Damian McKenzie, who is renowned for his seamless transitions between fly-half and fullback. For the immediate future, Smith will continue in the fullback role against Fiji, but his heart clearly remains set on wearing the No.10 jersey.
