Townsend Weighs Options Amidst Strong Scrum-Half Performances

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend is confronting a significant selection dilemma at scrum-half ahead of the crucial match against New Zealand. Jamie Dobie's exceptional form has put pressure on established first-choice No.9 Ben White. Dobie, 24, showcased his versatility and skill by scoring two tries and assisting another against the USA, before completing a hat-trick after moving to the right wing.

Ben White has been a consistent starter for Scotland, featuring in nine of their last ten Six Nations games and key matches against South Africa and Australia last November. He also impressed during his British & Irish Lions tour outings. George Horne is another strong contender, lauded for his "effervescent form" and having scored his ninth try for Scotland, a record for a scrum-half, while converting all five of Scotland's final scores against the USA. Townsend acknowledged the fierce competition, stating, "Oh, absolutely" when asked if Dobie was pushing White for a starting spot, and expressed hope that all three scrum-halves remain fit, as they offer "great options".

Return of Key Players and Injury Update

Several key players are set to rejoin the squad for the All Blacks clash, including Blair Kinghorn, Jamie Ritchie, Finn Russell, Rory Hutchinson, Tom Jordan, captain Sione Tuipulotu, Kyle Steyn, Pierre Schoeman, Ewan Ashman, Grant Gilchrist, and Matt Fagerson. Props Zander Fagerson and Elliot Millar Mills, along with flanker Rory Darge, are also expected to be fit for full training this week after returning from injury, further intensifying selection decisions for Townsend.

However, No. 8 Alex Masibaka has been ruled out of the autumn series due to an elbow injury sustained while playing for Montpellier, sidelining him for four to five weeks. Townsend plans to reduce the squad to around 40 players after reviewing the USA game.

All Blacks Face Their Own Injury Doubts

Meanwhile, New Zealand's head coach Scott Robertson has confirmed that two of the Barrett brothers, Scott and Jordie, are uncertain to feature in their match against Scotland next Saturday.
