Leicester’s seasoned back, Mike Brown, faces a two-week suspension following an incident where he directed expletives towards match officials subsequent to receiving a red card during their narrow 21-19 home loss to Bristol Bears.

The 38-year-old, a former stalwart of the England national team, was dismissed from the field in the 71st minute after his involvement in a tackle resulted in head contact. Brown’s disciplinary fate saw him handed a five-week ban, with three weeks of the penalty being suspended until the culmination of the season.

In addition to the suspension, Brown has been tasked with delivering “a presentation on the values of the game,” a session to be recorded and shared for educational purposes. This directive aims to underscore the repercussions of such behavior and reinforce rugby’s standards of conduct.

Leicester’s defeat to Bristol on April 27 dashed their aspirations of securing a spot in the end-of-season Premiership playoffs.

Acknowledging the severity of his actions, Brown pleaded guilty to a charge of conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game, acknowledging his disrespect towards the match officials.

An independent panel found that Brown had sworn as he left the pitch at Welford Road and that they were satisfied he “intended to be disrespectful about all the match officials”.

Their adjudication said: “Such offending is a direct undermining of the authority of the match officials and an attack on the game’s ethos and core values.”
