Already sidelined for Munster’s 2023-24 campaign, Springbok lock Jean Kleyn’s knee injury is reportedly more severe than first thought and requires specialist treatment.

Kleyn underwent surgery in January, and according to RTE pundit Bernard Jackman, could jeopardise his return for the better part of the international season.

Jackman’s reputable insights suggest that the former Ireland international has sought consultation in the US, hinting at deeper concerns. Originally injured in November, the prognosis may extend Kleyn's recovery into the next season.

The 30-year-old was a key member of South Africa's World Cup-winning squad last year and played off the bench in the final against the All Blacks in Paris.

The Boks will return to the field for the first time since the showpiece when they take on Wales at Twickenham on 22 June, a thrilling start to a 14-Test season that includes a July series against Ireland in the Republic before the Rugby Championship kicks off in August.
