With the Vodacom United Rugby Championship nearing the sharp end of the season, which of the four SA halfback combinations would you pick to start for the Boks against Wales?

The world champions are set to face the Dragons at Twickenham in a season-opener that falls outside the official Test window, and it’s possible that a URC halfback pairing gets the nod.

The Stormers feature a pair of Bok halfbacks in 24-cap scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies, who has found some form this season alongside flyhalf Manie Libbok, who played the last of his 14 Tests at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

In Durban, the rise of flyhalf Siya Masuku has been central to the Sharks’ quest for a maiden Challenge Cup trophy. Masuku’s calm demeanour has complemented World Cup winner Grant Williams (8 caps), forming an electric halfback pairing that appears destined for national duty.

A halfback duo with two scrumhalves? Former Sharks scrumhalf, Sanele Nohamba has evolved into the Lions first-choice flyhalf. Tipped by readers to start against Wales, Nohamba regular halfback partner is Morne van den Berg, arguably the form scrumhalf in the SA Shield.

Another Bok scrumhalf who’s upped his game this season, seven-Test Embrose Papier will be desperate to get back into a green and gold jersey after some standout performances alongside his Bulls halfback partner, Bok playmaker Johan Goosen (13 caps), who’ll be eyeing a return to the Bok setup himself.
