Andre Esterhuizen delivered a stunning snub of Springbok teammate Handre Pollard when asked to name the best flyhalf he has played with.

Pollard recovered in the nick of time to help the Springboks defend their World Cup title in 2023, kicking at a 100% success rate in the playoffs against France, England and New Zealand.

In 2019, Pollard was equally crucial to South Africa winning their first World Cup in 12 years, finishing as the tournament’s top points scorer.

However, in an interview with Planet Rugby, Esterhuizen, who has played alongside Pollard at international level, and against him in the English Premiership, surprisingly named Harlequins teammate Marcus Smith as the best flyhalf he has been partnered with.

"You're going to think I'm going to say Handre or Manie [Libbok],” Esterhuizen told Planet Rugby.

"But personally, work-ethic wise, as a student of the game and just an unbelievable player that can make something happen out of nothing, the best flyhalf I've played with in my life is Marcus.

"A lot of people perhaps don't see it, but Marcus is level-headed. He's one of those guys that, although he is one of the best in the world, is always wanting to learn, to be better.
